About the Artist
Los Angeles–based artist Shana Lutker’s work is shaped by archives of psychoanalysis and surrealism. Her interdisciplinary work in sculpture, performance, writing, and installation foregrounds an uncanny relationship between experience and memory. She has presented solo exhibitions at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington, D.C.), Pérez Art Museum (Miami), 18th Street Arts Center (Santa Monica), and Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects. Lutker’s work was included in the 2014 Whitney Biennial, Performa 13, and many U.S. and international venues, including the SculptureCenter (New York), Hauser and Wirth (Los Angeles), CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts (San Francisco), Moscow Museum of Modern Art, and Orange County Museum of Art (Newport Beach, California). Her work has appeared in Art in America, Artforum, Artillery, Blouin ArtInfo, Frieze, Hyperallergic, Los Angeles Times, and New York Times, among others. Lutker received an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, and BA from Brown University.
About the Art
Known for her sculptures and installations with rigorous investigations of cultural or social history, Shana Lutker presents the Contemporary Museum of Temporary Containers (CMTC), an installation of single-use containers donated by the local community. Using the language of archiving, curating, and museum display, the installation classifies and carefully arranges containers made of plastic, cardboard, aluminum, and glass painted in a single color by size, shape, volume, or former contents. Lutker’s project elevates the banal single-use container to something worthy of closer viewing, while contemplating creative reuse and the limits of sustainability and recycling at a critical juncture of environmental responsibility.
